Alexa Barcena, Ph.D. (she/her)

I have always had a strong sense of empathy and justice, as well as a desire to help others live a life that is full and meaningful to them. These factors, together with life experience, led me to realize from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in Psychology. I completed my Undergraduate education at Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles, CA, where I graduated with a BA in Psychology and a BA in Sociology.

I immediately applied to graduate schools in pursuit of my Ph.D., and I was lucky enough to attend Alliant International University - California School of Professional Psychology in beautiful San Diego, CA. Through the support and mentorship of some amazing professors, I found my calling in Health Psychology. Being someone who has struggled with chronic illness from a very early age, I have always implicitly felt the connection between our physical health and our mental health. Unfortunately, much of our world’s typical medical practice does not include the daily impact on one’s mental wellbeing. It has always been a strong aim of mine to bridge that gap in care. For that reason, most of my clinical training settings were in integrated medical setting, such as the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute and the UCSD Eating Disorder Center. I completed my Internship and Post-Doctoral Fellowship at a Federally Qualified Health Center in rural Wenatchee/Chelan, WA, where I expanded my expertise not just with health psychology but also in helping individuals manage survivorship of a myriad of traumas that life throws our way.

Upon gaining licensure in Washington state, I moved to Olympia and started working at the Kaiser Permanente location, primarily conducting cognitive assessments aimed at diagnosing various concerns, from ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to Mild Neurocognitive Disorders to Bipolar spectrum disorders. I also continued to conduct individual therapy with those living with physical health conditions, ASD, and working to reduce the impact of trauma on their daily lives. I completed assessments for gender-affirming surgeries. I am now branching out on my own and starting my own practice, where I plan to continue cognitive assessments, gender-affirming care letters, and individual psychotherapy.

I have fallen in love with Olympia, WA, and I enjoy walking the various local, beautiful trails, noticing the changes that occur throughout the seasons. I find solace in walking among the evergreens, renewal in the yearly spawning of the salmon, and joy in playing in our local lakes and rivers. I am a white woman dedicated to working on dismantling the ideals of White Supremacy that permeate our society at large, as well as my own implicit biases. I am a proud member of the LGBTQIA2s+ community, and my wife and I are “parents” to our beloved adopted Beagle-mix who we absolutely spoil. I love baking, reading, embroidery, and all manner of crafting. I am a member of the disabled community, and universality and accommodating all is important to me.
